Overview of Academic Research
Qiang Zhang, Optica (OSA) Fellow, the chair of ITU Focus Group on Quantum Information Technology for Network, HoD of the IEC/ISO JTC 3 Chinese Delegation.
Professor Zhang Qiang has long been dedicated to experimental research on quantum communication, quantum metrology and quantum device, achieving multiple world-record breakthroughs. He created (200 km in 2014) and continuously improved (404 km in 2016, 509 km in 2020, 1002 km in 2023) the world record for ground-based quantum key distribution, laying the technical foundation for quantum key distribution networks. He achieved 100 km free-space time-frequency transfer with a stability of E-19 over ten thousand seconds, verifying the feasibility of high-precision optical frequency standard comparisons between satellites and ground stations. Based on periodic poling lithium niobate waveguide, he developed high efficiency and low noise quantum frequency chip and single photon detector, which as found applications in large scale quantum network. He has published over 150 papers in international journals, including Review of Modern Physics (1), Nature (10), Nature Physics/Photonics (14), and PRL/X (61), with over 70 as first/corresponding author. His research has been cited in the scientific background document of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics, selected once as “2013 Highlight of the Year” by the American Physical Society, and twice as “Top Ten Chinese Science and Technology Progress News”.
